A self-guided walking tour let you wander through these homes and other buildings which are furnished with homesteader's belongings. Some days a blacksmith is on-site working at his forge. The village interpretive materials and books for sale tell the stories of homestead families in north Lake County, Oregon.

The Jefferson County Historical Museum, located for many years in the upper floor of the historic old County Courthouse in downtown Madras, was established in the 1970s. Since 2012, it has been “in storage,” waiting for a new home in the Westside Community Center. The Museum’s collection is crammed with historically significant objects, artifacts, records, photographs, and archival materials.

After Anna and Flora donated their home to the Josephine County Historical Society, the Board decided to continue the Schmidt's tradition of hospitality by developing the house as a museum to benefit the community. The Schmidt House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 21, 2004, confirming the historic significance of the house. Historic buildings are a community's tangible link with the past in a world in which rapid technological change is occurring.
