The Heritage Winooski Mill Museum opened in July 1998 as a "work-in-progress" exhibition in a donated gallery and hall space of the Champlain Mill, one of the former textile mills which now also houses shops, restaurants, and offices. A highlight of the hall exhibits is a large panorama of the Winooski Falls mill complex, c.1920, by Louis McAllister. There are also sequential maps of the mills site, 1840-1993.

The Museum is located on a 110-acre site along the Connecticut River, and the Museums' outdoor environment is a large part of the visitor experience. Science Park is a two-acre exhibit area in a beautiful, park-like setting where hands-on exploration of hydraulics truly becomes an immersion experience. Also outside is a network of easy-to-moderate walking trails for visitors of all ages and fitness levels, and an outdoor pavilion.
