Coarsegold Historic Museum
Coarsegold, California

General, History, Historic House, Historical Society

Coarsegold Historic Museum is located in a historically rich area of eastern Madera County. Three separate tribes of American Indians are represented here: Chukchansi, Miwok and Mono. This area is the end of the gold chain--the gold highway "49" should end in this region. There was much logging, mining, homesteading and cattle ranching done by the "white man" who came to the area in the mid 1800s. The museum has attempted to show the visitor the area in terms of days gone by. There are three buildings: a "packed adobe" which was a way-station for horse-drawn freight wagons over 100 years ago, a school for the Chukchansi Indian children and a barn (the main museum of artifacts) made of wood the came down the flume in the early 1900s.
