The Marston House Museum is one of San Diego's finest examples of the Arts and Crafts movement and was constructed in 1905 for George W. Marston and his wife, Anna Gunn Marston. George Marston is noted for many things but most prominently as a civic leader whose interest and work in historic preservation, conservation and history is renowned. The property was designed and built by the internationally renowned architects William Sterling Hebbard and Irving Gill.

The Green Hotel is located in downtown Shafter near the corner of Central Avenue and James Street, and is fully restored. The Hotel is open by invitation throughout the year. Tours may be arranged by appointment. For details, call 661-746-1913. The Green Hotel was built in 1913 by the Kern County Land Company to provide lodging for prospective buyers of the new town’s lots. It is the oldest commercial building in Shafter.

2010 marks the end of the first decade of the 21st century, and a milestone for the Southern Tuolumne County Historical Society (STCHS). It was 10 years ago that STCHS completed the construction of the Museum & Library building. We have maintained the building and operated the museum ever since.

Inside the Museum one will find pictures and artifacts telling the history of the forest products industry on the Mendocino Coast and the city of Fort Bragg. Pictures include water shipping, railroads, mills and wood scenes and the earthquake of 1906.

Of shingled Queen Anne style, the Guest House was built primarily in coast redwood in 1892 for Tom Johnson, a family business partner in Fort Bragg Redwood Company, as his private residence.
