The NEWTON COUNTY HISTORY CENTER (213 Court and Houston Streets) houses Newton County Archives/ History/Archaeology/Genealogy/Oral History/Historic Photographs/Photo Laboratory/Artifacts.

The Historic W. H. Ford College/Powell Hotel building/museum is located at 313 Rusk Street adjacent to the Historic Newton County courthouse. It is open during June/July/August from noon till 4:00p.m. Mon.-Fri. It may also be toured by special arrangements with the Chair of the History Commission.

The Haley Memorial Library & History Center houses near 30,000 volumes related Texas and Southwestern history. The collections include material gathered by the founder, J. Evetts Haley, Clayton Williams,Sr., Dan L. Thrapp, Robert N. Mullin, and other notable historians. The Library maintains an archives of photographs, maps, documents, diaries, interviews, and correspondence that relate pioneer history of the Southwest.

The North Texas History Center is the larget collection of North Texas history. We share with visitors in different changing exhibits the life of settlers that came to North Texas and settled. Our ongoing exhibits include Pioneering Roots, Cowboys and Cattledrives, and Texas' role in the Civil War. Future Special exhibits will be foucusing on different communities of people that have called Texas home, with exhibts on Black Texans,and Native Peoples already in development.

This organization began in response to circumstances which have confronted small towns for the past twenty years. The major problems are a decline in the downtown retail areas which has contributed to the neglect and decline of historic structures, along with a decline in economic base. Concurrently, we see a revival in our society of interest in going back to basic values, and an increasing amount of leisure time in a generally prosperous society and a peaceful world.
