A wonderful groundbreaking ceremony for the new Visitors’ Orientation and Education Center was held on June 3, 2008 and was a resounding success! The new 10,000 square foot state of the art “green” building is a public-private partnership among the Cylburn Arboretum Association, the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, the Horticultural Society of Maryland and Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks.

Built in 1858 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Evergreen House is a magnificent 48-room Italianate mansion on 26 wooded acres in Baltimore. Formerly the home of two generations of Baltimore's prominent Garrett family, Evergreen House and its collection of over 50,000 objects were bequeathed to the Johns Hopkins University in 1942 with the stipulation that the estate remain open to "lovers of music, art, and beautiful things.

The Washington Monument is the Nation's first civic memorial to George Washington. Built in the neo-classical style, the 178'8" monument was designed by architect Robert Mills and was completed in 1829, fourteen years after construction began. Mills also designed our more famous sister monument in Washington, D.C. The Monument held a profound meaning for 19th Century Americans and it is even now recognized as the preeminent symbol of the city of Baltimore.
