Description

Old Home Week has come and gone for another ten years. The society had a wonderful turnout during OHW and it was a pleasure to have so many visitors who stopped by to look over the displays, go on a walking tour, or attend our pancake breakfast fundraiser, which turned out to be a great hit. Through the generosity of Al & Sue Wurzberger we were able to reproduce "An Historical Address" from Old The Old Bank - Smyth Collection of the Historical Society - the site now becoming a town park due to the fire on Easter Day 2007 (click to enlarge) Home Week 1950 by Guy C. Hawkins to use as a fundraising tool which came out in time for Old Home Week. If you did not get one, and would like a copy, please contact a society officer or member.

During 2010 we held several informational presentations either at the museum or at other locations: the old woodshop at Adams Farm with tour guide Bill Adams, a slide show of old Wilmington photos by Wayne Rowell, a slide show was also held at Pettee Memorial Library about past Old Home Weeks, a presentation about the Newton Brothers was given by Will Melton, Ghost Stories by author David Pitkin, and the history of the old mill on Mill Street presented by Randy Schoonmaker. Attendance during each month has been fabulous and we look forward to many more presentations in the upcoming year. To keep posted about upcoming events go to the Town of Wilmington web site, www.wilmingtonvermont.us click on "Local Organizations" and then click on Historical Society of Wilmington. Our presentations/meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the months April through November at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise posted.

Renovations, repairs, upkeep, and many other projects keep us busy all year long. We are always trying to better the way we serve our community in sharing the history that has been collected over the years. Most of our maintenance work inside, outside and on the property is done by donation or volunteer work by our members.

Preserving history is so very important and the society works hard preserving and displaying artifacts. We encourage all to attend a presentation, function, or just stop by for a visit during our summer hours. Students from area schools studying history are always welcome and encouraged to visit too or go on a village walking tour.

Mission

The Historical Society of Wilmington, a duly organized nonprofit entity, is dedicated to collecting, preserving, teaching and displaying the history of Wilmington. This is realized with the efforts of all those who volunteer with the society as well as those who donate.
