Description

Local history museum. Ten galleries plus 2 restored houses and blacksmith shop in adjacent park. Collections strong in military history, furniture, decorative arts.

History

The Greensboro Historical Museum was founded by volunteers in 1924. Its home since 1939 has been a former church building dating to 1892, a building since listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Accredited by the American Associations since 1984, the museum joined the Smithsonian Affliation program in 2006. Approximately 15,000 sq. ft. of exhibit galleries feature military history, early transportation, social and ethnic history, historic room interiors, early 20th- century Greensboro, Dolley Madison, O. Henry, Confederate firearms, and the 1960 Greensboro Sit-Ins. Two historic houses, blacksmith shop, and woodworking shop are located in an adjacent park.

Artifacts Collections

  ·  Three-dimensional objects including the following areas: Costume and Textiles, Decorative Arts, Fine Arts, Militaria, Business and Industry, Sports, Entertainment, Work, Education, Religion and Politics. Major collections include military history, textiles, decorative arts and furniture, transportation, medical history, tools, Dolley Madison, O. Henry, and the John & Isabelle Murphy Confederate longarms collection. Collections number approximately 25,000 objects, including 150+ longarms made in munitions factories in seven states of the Confederacy, another 400 pieces of weaponry from the 18th to 20th centuries, 1800 pieces of glassware, 100 quilts, 600 ceramic pieces, and 125 dolls. The museum collections have been largely acquired through the generous donations of area residents and other supporters.

Research Collections

  ·  Archives: Two-dimensional items including paper based documents (manuscript and printed materials) and publications, audio-visual material, digital records, photographs, art on paper, numismatic and currency. Museum archives includes 150,000 documents, 5,000 books, 15,000 photo prints, more than 250,000 negatives, and over 1,000 miscellaneous printed items including magazines, prints and drawings, maps and advertisements. The archives provides research assistance on topics including neighborhoods, people, businesses, and buildings.

Gift Shop, Special Event Rental


Visitors will find an appealing variety of items to enrich their visit to the museum, as well as items for the home and gifts. Books pertaining to exhibitions and collections, as well as North Carolina and United States history, are available. Visitors can also purchase pottery from the nearby Seagrove area, vintage-style jewelry and decorative items, old-fashioned toys and games, and holiday items.
