Our mission is to: Maintain an archive of documentary materials concerning all facets of the history of The United Methodist Church.
Serve as the official repository of materials produced by the agencies, boards, commissions, committees, local churches and general officers of The South Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Collect and preserve historical artifacts related to the United Methodist Church.
Operate a Museum that interprets, through exhibits, tours and educational programs the early history of Methodism in America, particularly as it relates to John Wesley, the history of the South Georgia Conference and the history of the island history and of Epworth by the Sea.
Maintain a reference library of publications relevant to the history of Methodism and related Georgia history.
Conduct activities necessary to achieving these objectives of education, preservation and acquisition.
Since 1965, the Arthur Moore Methodist Museum has developed an ever expanding facility that houses the South Georgia Annual Conference official records, rare research books and journals, displays that depict Georgia history and origins of Methodism and an excellent educational program for children, youth, and adults. Last year, there were approximately 3600 total participants in the Museum’s educational programs. We have educated groups from sixteen states and several foreign countries. Located on the grounds of Epworth by the Sea on the banks of the historic Frederica River, the 100 acre retreat Center has 6 motels, 12 family apartments, and 13 youth buildings accommodating up to 1,000 persons.
We conduct historical research on churches, clergy, and Methodism. We appreciate if researchers call ahead or email us with their needs.
