Description

Established in 1961, there are currently five fully furnished and restored historic buildings representing a Lieutenants' Quarters, Commanding Officers Quarters, Barracks, Kitchen, and Commissary.

All structures are original dating from 1854-1891. There is a permanent mujseum as well as "outdoor museum" of the buildings in their historic setting, a beautiful box canyon of the Davis Mountains.

The nex building planned for restoration is the Post Hospital.

History

Established in 1961 as a unit of the National Park Service it has the title of National Historic Site andis a registered National Landmark.

In the 1950's the Fort Davis Historical Society created a museum and post trader building. It led the way for preserving the fort and was instrumental in the nomination.

Artifact Collections

late 19th century military & civilian artifacts including weapons, photographs, & regimental records; manuscripts; restored commanding officer's quarters; lieutenant's quarters; enlisted men's barracks; servant's quarters with kitchen, commissary. While it is predominately a military collection, there is social history, clothing, and a large range of Victoriana in the five furnished buildings.

American frontier military history; frontier Indian wars; "Buffalo Soldier" regiments

Educational Programs

12 minute slide show; 18 minute recording of a Dress Retreat Parade; Bugle Calls; self guiding tours of restored & refurnished buildings and grounds. Special events; summer with costumed interpreters. The park offeres " Mystery of the Talking Walls" activity for children; scavenger hunts for school groups; traveling trunks; off-site programs upon request aas well as summer series at the Davis Mountains state park.
