Description

Western History: interactive exhibits and brand-new facilities, 8 miles west of Elko, Nevada just off I-80 at Hunter Exit 292. Free admission for all ages!

Between 1841 and 1869, up to 250,000 people sold their belongings, packed wagons, and set out for California. Learn the stories of the pioneers who endured the 2,000 mile trek; some seeking land, some gold, others seeking adventure, and some for reasons we may never know. Discover in their words 2,000 miles of adventure.

Mission

The Southern Nevada Conservancy is a cooperating interpretive association in support of the mission of the California Trail Interpretive Center. The primary purpose of the Southern Nevada Conservancy is to "enhance overall conservation, recreational activities, education, and interpretive activities by providing partnerships between SNC and the land management agencies."

History

Senator Reid wrote and passed the legislation (Public Law 106-577) authorizing the Trail Center and has appropriated $12 million in federal funds for the project in recent years. The Trail Center is poised to become a major western cultural and educational attraction.

Artifact Collections

We have dioramas and interactive exhibits that immerse the visitor in the trail experience. We feature costumed interpretation and demonstrations of daily life for both Native Americans and pioneers. We feature a reconstructed Shoshone village and wagon encampment.
