Description

The Raney House Museum is located in Apalachicola, Florida in a Greek-revival mansion built in l838. On display in the Museum are furniture, carpets, paintings, historic documents and other 19th century artifacts.

History

Steamboats operated on the Apalachicola River beginning in 1828 and brought cotton from plantations in Georgia and Alabama to be processed in Apalachicola and shipped from there to mills in New England and Europe. In 1836, 50,000 bales of cotton were shipped from Apalachicola, making it the third largest cotton port on the Gulf Coast after Nedw Orleans and Mobile. The three decades prior to the Civil War were prosperous ones, and revenues from the cotton trade built several fine mansions including the Raney House. David Greenway Raney, who built the mansion in 1838,established a prosperous commission company in the cotton trade. He served as Mayor of Apalachicola for two terms. His and his wife's three sons served in the Confederate forces. Members of the Raney family lived in the house until 1914 when it was sold to a local doctor. The Raney House was placed on the National Register of Historic Homes in 1972. It was purchased by the City of Apalachicola in 1973. The City of Apalachicola and the Apalachicola Area Historical Society (AAHS) entered into an agreement in July, 1979 by which the AAHS assumed the management and operation of the Raney House Museum.

Artifacts Collections

19th century furniture, carpets, paintings, historic documents and other artifacts of the period. Of special is a collection of Confederate bonds and currency.
