Monessen Heritage Museum is a new museum in Westmoreland County. It opened its doors in October of 2004. It is owned and operated by the Greater Monessen Historical Society, which has been in existence since 1993 and has a membership of over 200 persons. The museum is housed in a four story commercial building which was donated to the GMHS. It is located at 505 Donner Avenue in the heart of the downtown. To date, the main floor is open and three or four completely new exhibits will be opened each year. The building was a boarding house for steel workers. The second floor is in the process of being turned into an archive and library. The top two floors will slowly be restored.
Exhibitions, teacher workshops, tours, lectures, ethnic cooking demonstrations, ethnic crafts, local history programming, book talks, travel series
The Greater Monessen Historical Society is composed of citizens who come from Monessen's diverse ethnic heritage and strong industrial background who want to protect, preserve and enhance that heritage. "I wish I could clone this museum and put it in every town in the region!" (Doris Dyen, Rivers of Steel Heritage Park)
4 newsletters a year. Ethnic cookbooks, local history and locally authored works. DVD's are currently being created.
