Description

The Topsfield Historical Society preserves and maintains the 1683 Parson Capen House, one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in America, the 1710 Captain Joseph Gould Barn, a variety of artifacts, and an extensive records collection. The Society also sponsors a wide variety of events and programs throughout the year.

Mission

The Topsfield Historical Society is dedicated to the study and preservation of the history of Topsfield Massachusetts.

History

Incorporated in 1650, Topsfield was a mostly agrarian community in Colonial times, with some small manufacturing such as shoe making emerging in the latter part of the 19th century. Today its picturesque town common, historic homes and small-town ambience make it an exceptionally attractive community.

Artifact Collections

The Capen House features many period items, including some belonging to the Capen family. The Gould Barn's collection includes items relating to farming and the shoe industry.

Research Collections

The Society maintains a records collection that includes a variety of photos, deeds, articles, geneological reference material and publications relating to the history of Topsfield.

Educational Programs

The Society sponsors many events throughout the year. These include the Strawberry Festival in June with a variety of crafters, food and entertainment, a Doll Tea for children the last Wednesday in August, the Witches Roost Halloween Party for children, and the Parson Capen Thanksgiving Open House on Thanksgiving Day where a costumed family roasts a turkey on the open fireplace and visiting children play Colonial games and make crafts while everyone enjoys hot & cold cider.

The Society also hosts a monthly lecture series, featuring historians, subject experts, performers and authors. These are free to the public, and a current schedule can be found on the Society's website.
