Description

Discover stories of the downtown courthouse and the 1862 Battle of Murfreesboro through exhibits, programs, and tours.

We tell these stories through diverse exhibits, public programs, educational events, and downtown tours. The Heritage Center also serves as an orientation center directing visitors to historic and cultural sites, resources, and events throughout the county. The Heritage Center and all its events and services are free and open to the public.

Mission

Our mission to is tell the engaging and compelling stories of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County to visitors and residents alike, with a special focus on Murfreesboro as a Civil War battlefield and key federal occupation base.

Educational Programs

The Middle Tennessee Civil War Roundtable meets monthly at the Heritage Center for roundtable discussions and presentations on a variety of Civil War topics.

Support for Students

Our partnership with the Heritage Area, Center, and MTSU allow us to provide a hands-on learning laboratory for students across a variety of disciplines, including history, art, graphic design, theater, education, and business administration.

A field trip to the Heritage Center provides a unique, hands-on learning event for schools, Scout troops, history clubs, home schoolers, and anyone who has an interest in history. Each activity is thoroughly researched by degreed historians and Masters and PhD student candidates, and complies with the Tennessee Social Studies curriculum guidelines. The Heritage Center is a partnership project of the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area and Main Street Murfreesboro/Rutherford County, Inc. Additional sponsors include the City of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County, Middle Tennessee State University, and the State Farm Insurance Companies.

Services
Volunteering

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students in many disciplines. Volunteering at the Heritage Center is a great way to gain valuable experience in museum exhibit design, heritage tourism, education, site management, graphic design, working with Main Street organizations, and historic research. It's also a powerful way to build your resume.

Historic Tours of the Downtown Square

We also offer free tours of the historic downtown square, with emphasis on the 1862 Battle of Murfreesboro that occurred there. For more information, contact us at (615) 217-8013.
