The Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society, Incorporated is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 1957 with a mission to preserve and interpret Eastern Shore history and to educate the community about its past. Our organization offers itself as a vehicle for cultural enhancement as well as a facilitator for history education through our exhibits, programs, collections and preservation initiatives.

The Essex County Museum, a non-profit organization, begun in late 1995 and lets visitors take a peek into the history of the area of Essex County and Tappahannock. From John Smith landing in 1608 to Civil War battles in the 1860's to the birth of the modern town, the Essex County Museum has it all. The Museum is proud to provide a series of Workshops during the year that feature local experts and artists.

The Mansion serves as a home for Virginia's Governors, a place for public events and is also open at certain times for visitors. The current residents of the Executive Mansion are Governor Robert F. Esther Thomas Atkinson Museum

The Esther Thomas Atkinson Museum of Hampden-Sydney College houses a changing exhibition of memorabilia illustrating the rich history of Hampden-Sydney, the last American college founded under the British crown. Its first classes met in November 1775.The museum is a non-profit educational organization of Hamden-Sydney College that collects, preserves and interprets the history of the College, its staff, faculty, alumni and the community in which it exists. Special emphasis is on the founding of the College in 1775 through the end of the 19th century. Portraits, furniture, textiles, accessories, jewelry, glass, ceramics, silver and much more are on display.
