Pamunkey Indian Museum

The major focus of the Pamunkey Indian Museum is to teach about the Pamunkey people and their way of life throughout history, from the ice age to the present. Tools and other items are shown as they would have been seen and used by the Native Americans of that period. Original artifacts are displayed along with replicas based on the most up-to-date information on how things were made, handled, used, and worn out. It is hoped visitors will be inspired by our history and whether by a brisk walk through or studying some perid in detail, an interest will be generated about the lives of the people who left this great legacy.

It was here at Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown that Henry conceived his most influential revolutionary ideas. Scotchtown is the only original standing home of the Patriot and Orator of the American Revolution; Patrick Henry lived here from 1771-1778. It was at Scotchtown that he formulated the ideas of his famous “Liberty or Death” speech and it was from the house that he rode to St. John’s Church in Richmond on March 23, 1775 to deliver it.

Pamplin Pipe Factory

The Pamplin Pipe Factory is one of the two facilities in Appomattox County listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its history dates back to the Appomatucks Indians and their cottage industry of clay pipes. The Pamplin Pipe Factory was built in 1880. It houses the original clay kiln which once produced one million clay pipes per month. The site also includes a museum which showcases Native American artworks.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum
Portsmouth, Virginia

During the Revolutionary War, the shipyard was described by the British as “the most considerable one in America.” It’s been burned three times by retreating armies because of its strategic importance. Many historic ships have been built here, including the CSS VIRGINIA (EX-MERRIMAC), the first ironclad to engage in battle; the nation’s first battleship, the TEXAS; and the world’s first aircraft carrier, the LANGLEY. The shipyard is also home to the country’s first drydock, which is still in use. At its peak during WWII, the yard employed nearly 43,000 workers.
