Smith’s Fort Plantation

Smith’s Fort Plantation is nestled on the south side of the James River, located on the site of Captain John Smith’s planned “New Fort”, on the land given by Chief Powhatan as a dowry for his daughter Pocahontas upon her marriage to John Rolfe. The 18th century manor house retains much of its original woodwork and provides examples of early American and English period furnishings from the late 16th through the early 18th centuries.

The present Old Berea Christian Church was built in 1856 under the supervision of Samuel Alsop, who, even though he was 81, was considered one of the foremost builders of that time. This little church is a fine example of Virginia's Gothic Revival period architecture, and is exceptionally well preserved.

The Museum offers an interesting "tour through time" that reflects the economic and social development of the county and, in general, rural Southwest Virginia. There are also special exhibits highlight unique periods of the County's heritage and offer insights into what life was like. .
