Designated the Official Transportation Museum for the Commonwealth in 1984, the museum's mission is to preserve and interpret the heritage of the Commonwealth by collecting, restoring and exhibiting significant artifacts relating to the transportation industry.
Museum exhibits and research library comprise the largest collection of material in the Roanoke Valley devoted solely to tracing human history. Exhibits offer a glimpse of how life was lived in southwestern Virginia, creating a vivid cultural and educational experience. Rotating exhibits allows the Museum to focus on a variety of people, industries and events that have influenced the development of the region.

The new Taubman Museum of Art, an 81,000 square-foot Museum in downtown Roanoke, has been constructed. The new facility, designed by architect Randall Stout, is transforming western Virginia with an architectural achievement like no other. The facility houses state-of-the-art exhibition galleries, a stellar permanent collection, and an education center that provides innovative and exemplary education initiatives that will enhance and improve K-12 and higher education programs in the region. The Taubman Museum of Art is the boldest public-private economic development project ever undertaken in the western region of the Commonwealth.
Stroll through three centuries of history in the park which also offers biking, hiking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, as well as dining at the Brugh Tavern, and special events May through October.
Our 2024 WVAM Conference will be held at Shepherd Universit
in Shepherdstown, WV on June 6-8, 2024
WVAM conference is a program of papers, presentations, workshops, and poster sessions addressing our theme of “America at 250: West Virginia Plans for the Semiquincentennial.”
We’ll kick off the event with a virtual day on Wednesday, July 24, hosted in collaboration with the Association of Midwest Museums (AMM). Then, we’ll gather in-person at the Hilton Columbus at Easton from July 31-August 3 for sessions, networking, and museum exploration. The SCFM Annual Conference is a time where we can celebrate the impact that museums have made on the state of South Carolina. It’s a time where we can share our successes, learn from our challenges, and grow as museum professionals.
We look forward to this year's conference September 16-18, 2024 in Laurens, SC. This year's theme is Fostering Community: There is No Museum Without "Us."
