Historic House

Built in 1683 and occupied by Caleb Pusey, this is the only building still standing which can claim documented association with William Penn, and which he is known to have visited on several occasions. The cottage was continuously occupied as a residence from 1682 through 1959. Our group was organized in 1960 to undertake restoration of the house and property which by then had deteriorated to the point of imminent collapse. With the successful restoration and a significant archeaological project, we have continued to offer education and scholarly opportunities to our constituencies. We continue to expand our laboratory facilities and are computerizing our artifact and collection catalogs.

Chichester Historical Society (CHS), which encompasses the surrounding Chichester area, including Lower Chichester, Marcus Hook, Trainer and Upper Chichester was founded back in the 1980’s. More recently it has grown and solidified as an organization. Over the last few years the organization has developed a strong foundation with its members, who are not only interested in the rich history of Chichester but also interested in sharing its history with the public as well as working with the different entities of the townships to create awareness and help preserve the heritage of Chichester.

The Delaware Children's Theatre has become a fixture in the State of Delaware and the gateway to the City of Wilmington. Today, the DCT is a thriving theatrical institution committed to providing families with a place to enjoy exceptional children's theatre. The restoration of the Hendrickson House took place in 1958, after it was moved to Wilmington to prevent its being torn down. The pine mantel and woodwork around the large fireplace are original, but the floorboards were taken from a Massachusetts farmhouse of the same period. The pine ceiling beams were made by hand as part of the restoration. Existing doors and windows were used as patterns for new ones, and the curved staircase was reconstructed in accordance with marks on the walls. The straight staircase is new; it was added for safety reasons. The house is now used as the church offices and a small museum.

Rockwood is a 150 year old estate that is now a public park featuring a six acre historic garden and a mansion with a museum. Joseph Shipley, a Quaker merchant banker, built Rockwood between 1851 and 1854 to reflect the beauty of an English county estate
