Special Hurricane Note:GAC suffered minor damage (a broken window and probably some water damage), but the building is still standing. The building was inundated with 4 feet of water in the downstairs galleries and the majority of the Helen Altman exhibition suffered water damage. The doors to the building are swollen and/or rusted shut.

The museum was created in response to the wishes of Mary Moody Northen, the last family member to reside in the house. Although Mrs. Northen's will dictated that the Moody family home become a museum following her death, it did not specify the type of museum.

Funded by a bequest from Swiss emigré banker and commission merchant Henry Rosenberg, the Rosenberg Library was chartered by the State of Texas in 1900. Opening its doors in 1904, this library has served since its inception as the public library and museum for the City of Galveston.

The Texas City Museum is supported by the City of Texas City. Located at 409 6th Street North in Texas City, the Museum acquired its current building in March 1992. The 30,000 sq. ft. building, previously known as the old J.C. Penney building, was donated by the McDaniel family of La Marque. Since its opening in March 1994, visitors from around the United States and abroad have toured the Museum.
