Aviation Wing of the Marietta Museum of History

The Aviation Wing of the Marietta Museum of History is presently comprised of a 15.5 acre park. The park features various civilian and military aircraft from the latter half of the twentieth century in addition to aircraft produced locally in Marietta. Aviation in Marietta begins with Bell Aircraft in the early 1940s and continued to grow with Lockheed Martin from the 1950s to present. Aviation has played an integral role in Marietta's history and with aircraft manufacturing continuing to be a prominent industry; the Aviation Wing desires to have visitors explore the complete story of our community. The Aviation Wing will officially open to the public the first of the New Year 2011.

Archibald Smith Plantation Home

The 1845 Smith Plantation was home to three generations of Archibald Smith (one of founders of Roswell, GA) family until 1981. Original furnishings, 11 outbuildings, Cook and Carriage House, Barn, Slave Cabin, & Corn Crib can be viewed on the property. Activities for the family include Fall Farm Days, Harvest Moon Dinner Dance, Camp Yesteryear, and Gingerbread Christmas. Rotating exhibits feature some of the 3,000 artifacts belonging to the Smith family are on display in the Barn.

The museum curates the largest and most significant historical collection in the CSRA and functions as a historical research and resource center for professional and amateur historians, media, organizations and individuals, and is home to permanent exhibition Augusta’s Story, a 12,000 year journey through the region’s past. The exhibition has received several awards including the prestigious Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History, the Georgia Historical Society Local Achievement Award, and the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries Permanent Exhibition of the Year, 1998.

Furnished in period antiques and some reproductions, Bellevue provides a lovely backdrop to weddings and receptions. Tall columns grace three sides of this Greek Revival house. Original heart pine floors and beautifully carved pediments are among the treats to see. Two parlors connected by large working pocket doors are kept unfurnished to make room for meetings and parties.

Cannonball House Museum

At Cannonball House we strive to educate,promote and develop public interest in the cultural, architectural and historical heritage of the community. The house is a beautiful example of Greek Revival Architecture. In 1864, the house was struck by a Union Army artillery shell, damaging the front and an interior wall. It was the only residential property in Macon damaged during the battle of Dunlap's Farm. We have a large collection of military artifacts in our museum and the house is furnished as it would have been in the 1860's, many of the pieces orginal to the house. We offer wonderful weekend events to explore life in the 19th century, such as yarn dyeing and spinning, candle making, pottery and music.
