Born in Plymouth, Vermont, on July 4, 1872, Coolidge was the son of a village storekeeper. He was graduated from Black River Academy in 1890 and attended Amherst College, graduating with honors, and entered law and politics in Northampton, Massachusetts. Slowly, methodically, he went up the political ladder from councilman in Northampton to Governor of Massachusetts, as a Republican. En route he became thoroughly conservative.

DAR John Strong Mansion Museum

The DAR John Strong Mansion Museum was built in the mid-1790's by General John Strong and his wife Agnes McClure Strong to replace the family's cabin that had been burned by the Indian and Tory forces under General John Burgoyne. Five generations of the Strong family occupied this lovely home until around the Civil War.

Brattleboro is a river town rich in history. It was the site of the first permanent English settlement in Vermont, Fort Dummer, in 1724. The town was chartered in 1753. It has been a printing town since William Fessenden began publishing books in 1805. For more than 100 years Brattleboro was the home of the world famous Estey Organ Company. Wells Fountain, pictured on the Society's logo, stands at the north end of Main Street and was designed by architect William Rutherford Mead, who grew up in Brattleboro.

The Foundation was formed in part to redress the fact that there is no federally funded presidential library for Calvin Coolidge, our 30th U.S. President. John F. Kennedy, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Herbert Hoover, and Jacqueline B. Kennedy are among the many Sponsors and National Advisory Board members over the last 50 years. The Foundation preserves the Coolidge's legacy, and provides primary and interpretive information through a Website and by request, to teachers and students, scholars, the media and the general public. The Coolidge Foundation owns and maintains its offices in the President Calvin Coolidge Museum and Education Center in Plymouth Notch Vermont.
