Established in 1865, the Montana Historical Society is one of the oldest institutions of its kind west of the Mississippi River. Learn more about Montana's Museum, the Montana Historical Society Press, Montana The Magazine of Western History, the Montana State Historic Preservation Office, and the MHS Research Center. Join in the countless programs we offer through our Outreach and Interpretation division, or shop in our unique Museum Store in person or online.

Upper Swan Valley Historical Society Museum
Condon, Montana

The upper Swan Valley area is unique in that it still retains a plethora of evidence of its varied history. There still exist old Indian trails crisscrossing our mountains. Old trapper cabins and marten notched trees are still around on the landscape. This area was homesteaded and settled at a relatively late date, primarily from the mid-1910's and later, with many artifacts and buildings of that particular era still in existence. Early Forest Service ranger station buildings and cabins are still here. Springboard notched trees and sawmill sites from the early logging days are scattered around the valley. The early dude ranches and lodges are still here today.

H. Earl Clack Museum

The H. Earl Clack Museum covers Hill County history from the age of dinosaurs through the present. Native American displays along with those of the US Cavalry give way to early settlers, cowboys and rodeo stars who all were part of Havre's colorful history.

Nevada City Living History Museum
Virginia City, Montana

Our outdoor living history museum in Nevada City, Montana, houses one of the largest collections of old west artifacts outside the Smithsonian. The site consists of one hundred, 1863 to early 1900 buildings, and close to 40 Living History Interpreters. 14 original buildings from Historic Nevada City remain on site, many other era structures were moved to the site by Bovey Restorations, and placed on the street plan of Nevada City. The Museum is open to visitors from mid-May - mid-September, Living History weekends are held Memorial weekend through Labor Day weekend all summer long, by professionally trained living historians.
