Arthurdale New Deal Homestead Museum

Arthurdale is the nation's first New Deal Homestead Community. It provided a chance for coal miners and others suffering from the effects of the Great Depression. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was an active force behind the project, was active in its progress and visited often. She handed out high school graduation diplomas from 1935 to 1944 and often invited graduates to dine at the White House.

The Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society (CPH) is one of 160 National Railway Historical Societies in the United States. Founded in 1959, and became a part of the NRHS in 1959. Our goals as a chapter are: “Preserve documents and artifacts of railroad history, to promote the use and improvement of the present railroad industry, to acquire and restore rolling stock for display and operations, and to generally encourage public interest in the ongoing story of the North American railroads.”

The Royce J. and Caroline B. Watts Museum

Housed in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at WVU, the Royce J. and Caroline B. Watts Museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting the social, cultural and technological history of the coal, oil and natural gas industries of the state of West Virginia through the collection, preservation, research and exhibition of objects relevant to these industries. The museum is named in honor of Royce J. Watts, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, and his wife, Caroline, who have tirelessly supported its mission.

WVNCC Alumni Association Museum
Wheeling, West Virginia

The Alumni Association has acted as historians for the College, working to preserve the history of the buildings occupied by the college and the relationship of those edifices to the community. The Alumni’s museum, established in 1985, has preserved and maintained a large collection of B&O memorabilia and one-thousand pieces of Hazel Atlas Glass. In an effort to reflect the local history of the New Martinsville Campus, the Alumni also has a display of original Viking Glass on that campus that was donated by Mrs. Homer Hoskins, Jr.

Barbour County Historical Society Museum

Living Heritage Museum/New Era One Room School

The New Era School was built in 1884 and served students in grades 1 through 8 until 1956. The facility then served as a community building for the Missouri Run area. It was later turned over to the Wood County Association of Retired School Employees. In 1991, the Living Heritage Museum Project, a newly formed volunteer organization, acquired the building for restoration.

Located at 81 West Main Street, the History Center is open between early June and the end of September, 2008, Sunday afternoons, 1-4pm. Each summer we have many returning visitors and some who are visiting for the very first time. We still have too many people who tell us that they want to make a visit but put it off until the exhibit closes. Make a note on your calendar to visit the exhibit this summer.
