History, Historic House

The Pioneer Memorial Log House Museum is uniquely situated between the Texas Medical Center and Houston's Hermann Park. By latest count 6.4 million people per year visit the park.

Currently, a new entrance to the zoo is being built directly across from the facility.

The Log House was built over 60 years ago by the San Jacinto Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas. It was first used as a hospitality center for the Texas Centennial.

Many people who have lived in Houston most of their lives are still unaware of the Log House's existence. One of the greatest problems we face is that of public visibility. We need tofind ways to encourage people to come. The membership of the Chapter (the Museum) is more that willing to expand the hours.

According to A Position Paper for the White House Conference on Travel and Tourism, "America's rich heritage, rooted in our history, our creativity, and our diverse population, provides visitors to our communities with a wide variety of cultural opportunities, including museums, arts and crafts, historic sites, dance, music, theater, festivals, historic buildings and neighborhoods, landscapes, and literature."

Through its collections, exhibits, publications, and educational and social programs, the Presidential Museum is immersed in the multicultural opportunities of West Texas as it offers insights into our national democracy and its offices for all age levels and cultures.

There are currently 3 acres and 11 historic buildings to tour and see how the true pioneers of this town built it from the ground up. There are numerous artifacts to see and stories to hear. Some of the artifacts on exhibit include stagecoach wagons, a blacksmith shop, antique craftsman equipment like band saws, fencing materials and cooking utensils…just to name a few. Also, currently in our Social Hall, a Vereins Kirche exhibit is on rotation. Our programs and tour guides tell the stories of these settlers and the hard times they faced.
