Nemacolin Castle or Bowman's Castle

Nemacolin Castle, also known as Bowman's Castle, was built in present-day Brownsville, Pennsylvania, at the western terminus of the Nemacolin's Trail. It was built around the original trading post, which was built near the site of Fort Burd, the latter built by British colonists during the French and Indian War. Construction on the castle, including additions of a crenelated tower, continued through the Victorian era.

The Paper Mill House and Museum originally provided housing, in the 1800's for industrial workers who worked in the mills along Darby Creek. A large addition was added circa 1820. The older section was converted to a general store, circa 1845, to provide for the needs of the workers. Darby Creek runs through the property to the east of the building. The building, now owned by Newtown Township, has been restored to house The Newtown Township Historical Preservation Society and its permanent historical exhibits. The 1st floor is colonial reproduction and gift shop with the 2nd floor housing the Newtown history exhibits. Mill remains can be found throughout the property.

The New London Area Historical Society local history collection is full of interesting items that tell the unique and interesting history of New London Township and the surrounding area. Included in the records are materials from historical organizations, scrapbooks, deeds, and large collection of with images of people, places, and documents relating to New London Township.
