The earliest history of Allerton Garden was intermingled with the upper part of the Lawa’i Valley that is now the McBryde Garden. Both were integral to the ahupua’a (land division) of Lawa’i. It was not until well after the arrival of the first Europeans in the late 1700s and the subsequent changes to the traditional Hawaiian way of life that the history of the lower Lawa’i Valley began to diverge from that of the upper valley.

Francis and Ann Marie Koenig first came to Calvert County in 1955 seeking a retreat from his career as an architecht/builder/developer in Washington, DC. They quickly fell in love with the area and in 1956 built a beach house in Long Beach. Soon they became avid sailors and could often be found heading out of Flag Harbor Marina on their sailboat, "Annmarie." They shared their love for the area with their family, taking their grandchildren for walks through the American Chestnut Land Trust on Parker's Creek.

Bacon's Castle

Bacon’s Castle was originally home to a prosperous planter, Arthur Allen, and his family. Following Allen’s death, the house was inherited by his son, Major Arthur Allen II. A loyalist supporter of the colonial government and member of the House of Burgesses, Major Allen was driven from his house in 1676 by followers of the patriot rebel Nathaniel Bacon, whose uprising later came to be known as Bacon’s Rebellion. The episode later gave Bacon’s Castle its name though the house remained in the Allen family until 1844.
