Big Black Creek Historical

The Big Black Creek Historical Association, Inc. was formed to identify, preserve, and promote historical and cultural sites within eastern Haywood and western Madison Counties in Tennessee including the communities of Denmark, Leighton, Mercer, and Woodland. Restoration of the Denmark Presbyterian Church is underway with a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation and Madison County. Neglected family cemeteries are being restored and readings published for genealogists searching for family roots. A driving tour is being developed, and guided tours are available on request. Originally settled by farmers looking for better land to grow cotton, many farms have remained in the same family over 100 years.

This is a Church building built in 1854 with slave labor. It served as a prison for 97 soldiers of the 30th Illinois from the Battle of Briton Lane which is four miles behind the church. It is being restored. The building has hand hewn lumber, put together with square nails and windows made on site. There was a Masonic Lodge on the second floor with a pit for induction of converts to the York Rite of the lodge. One of only two known in Tennessee. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Falcon Rest Mansion

In 1896, entrepreneur Clay Faulkner told his wife Mary he'd build her "the finest mansion in the region" if she would move next to their woolen mill, 2-1/2 miles from downtown McMinnville.
Mary agreed, and Faulkner supervised construction as enthusiastically as he promoted the mill's "Gorilla Pants" (so strong even a gorilla couldn't tear them apart) and mineral water at the Faulkner Springs Hotel, the "ideal health and pleasure resort" he would eventually open on the lake across the road.
Faulkner's solid-brick, 10,000-square-foot mansion had all the "modern conveniences" when it was built -- electric lights, indoor plumbing, central heat, and more.
